What a face serum is actually for, and why we finally made one

What a face serum is actually for, and why we finally made one

If you've managed perfectly well for years with just a bar of soap and a balm, you're allowed to be suspicious of a serum. It sounds like one more bottle to remember at 9pm when all you actually want is to get into bed. So here's the honest version: a serum isn't there to replace what you're already doing. It does one particular job that soap and balm were never built for, and once you know what that job is, it's a lot easier to tell whether you need one.

So what's a serum meant to do that soap and balm don't

Soap's job is to clean. Balm's job is to seal moisture in and stop it escaping. A serum sits in between the two, and it's built lighter than either on purpose. Where a balm is thick enough to sit on top of skin as a barrier, a serum is thin enough to soak straight in, carrying a smaller number of ingredients at a higher concentration to wherever it lands.

That's really the whole trick of a serum: less water, less filler, and a texture that disappears fast enough to sink in before you've finished doing your hair. For skin that's already dry or a bit thinner and drier with age, that quick absorption matters, because a heavy layer on top of already-tight skin can sit there feeling greasy rather than sinking in and doing anything useful.

None of that makes a serum essential. Plenty of people do perfectly well on soap and balm alone. What it means is that a serum earns its place as an extra, targeted step, not as a replacement for the basics.

Why chamomile, and why we left the fragrance out

We get asked a lot about which flower or herb we'd reach for first if we were only allowed one. Chamomile keeps winning that conversation, and it's the reason our new Tallow Glow Face & Neck Serum is infused with it rather than anything showier.

Chamomile has a long history in skin care for a reason. It's one of the gentler botanicals around, which is exactly why it turns up in products aimed at sensitive, reactive or easily irritated skin rather than in the punchier, more active-heavy end of the market. We wanted a serum that mature and dry skin could use daily without wondering if today was going to be the day it stung.

That same thinking is why we left fragrance out altogether. A face serum sits close to the eyes and goes on twice a day, so it's exactly the product where added scent has the most chance to cause trouble and the least reason to be there. What you're left with is the chamomile itself and a base built to absorb, nothing else competing for space on your skin.

Where it sits in a morning and night routine for dry, mature skin

The order matters more than the number of products. Cleanse first with something that won't strip what little natural oil your skin is still making. Our Gentle Soothing Soap Bar Unscented was made for exactly this, fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive, dry or mature skin that's tired of feeling tight after washing.

Pat your face dry rather than rubbing it, then while it's still a little damp, smooth a few drops of Tallow Glow over your face and neck. That's the moment a serum works hardest, sinking into skin that's still holding some moisture from the wash rather than fighting to get through skin that's already dried out again. If your skin wants more richness on top once the serum has settled in, especially overnight, a small amount of our Whipped Chamomile Tallow & Coconut MCT Oil layers on well, since it shares the same chamomile base.

Morning and night is plenty. This isn't a routine that needs a dozen steps to earn its keep, just the right few, done in the right order, with a couple of weeks to actually judge how your skin responds.

Tallow Glow is new to the homestead, made in the same small batches as everything else we send out, and priced at $28 for a 10ml bottle that lasts a good while at a few drops a day. If your skin has been feeling drier and thinner than it used to, and you've been wondering whether a serum is worth the extra step, this is the one we'd suggest starting with. As always, if it doesn't suit you, tell us and we'll sort it out. No return needed.
